The Rio Grande National Forest in south-central Colorado conducts ongoing reforestation activities to restore landscapes affected by wildfire and other disturbances. Tree planting is an important component of the forest's management strategy and helps maintain healthy ecosystems, improve wildlife habitat, and increase resilience to future environmental stressors.


Reforestation efforts are typically implemented after wildfires or timber harvest operations. Native seedlings are planted to increase the number of trees regenerating in disturbed areas, accelerate forest recovery, and encourage the growth of appropriate species. On average, between 50,000 and 90,000 seedlings are planted annually throughout the forest. Engelmann spruce is the most commonly planted species, with seeds collected locally to preserve genetic adaptation to the region. These seeds are grown in specialized nurseries before being returned to the forest for planting.


Through these efforts, the Rio Grande National Forest continues to strengthen watershed health, reduce erosion, enhance wildlife habitat, and improve the long-term resilience of its landscapes. Reforestation supports the ecological integrity of the forest while helping maintain the many natural resources and recreational opportunities that the area provides.

About this forest

Covering approximately 1.83 million acres in south-central Colorado, the Rio Grande National Forest contains diverse ecosystems ranging from alpine peaks to spruce-fir and ponderosa pine forests. Primary tree species include Engelmann spruce, Douglas-fir, ponderosa pine, aspen, pinyon pine, and juniper. The forest supports abundant wildlife, including elk, mule deer, black bears, mountain lions, bighorn sheep, and numerous bird species, making it an important center of biodiversity.
