Planting in this forest.

In 2023, Ochoco National Forest expanded restoration efforts through the Big Summit Prairie Restoration and Reforestation project. Approximately 85,000 native tree seedlings were planted in areas impacted by wildfire, drought, and forest decline. The project focused on restoring healthy forest structure, improving wildlife habitat connectivity, and increasing resilience against future climate-related disturbances.

The 2021 Bootleg and Windigo Fire Recovery Support initiative contributed to broader reforestation efforts across fire-affected regions in Oregon, including restoration work connected to Ochoco National Forest landscapes. Around 110,000 trees were planted to stabilize soils, reduce erosion risks, and support the recovery of native ecosystems damaged by severe wildfire activity.

In 2019, the Ochoco Forest Health and Resilience Project focused on restoring overstocked and stressed forest stands through strategic reforestation and habitat improvement activities. A total of 76,500 trees were planted to help strengthen biodiversity, improve watershed protection, and promote long-term ecological balance throughout the forest.

The 2018 Pine Creek Reforestation Initiative addressed areas impacted by insect damage, drought stress, and historic land degradation. Approximately 54,000 native conifer seedlings were planted to restore forest cover, support wildlife populations, and improve the overall resilience and health of the landscape.

About this forest

Ochoco National Forest, located in central Oregon, spans more than 850,000 acres of forests, grasslands, rivers, and rugged canyon landscapes. Known for its ponderosa pine forests and diverse wildlife, the forest provides habitat for elk, mule deer, black bears, and many bird species. Restoration efforts focus on reducing wildfire risk, restoring native vegetation, improving ecosystem resilience, and protecting watersheds to support healthy forests for future generations.
